Abstract: A dynamic similarity between model and prototype of a river with movable bed needs to satisfy a number of relations. However, all relations cannot be satisfied simultaneously. The attempt should be to satisfy as many relations as possible considering the practical limitations. A systematic procedure for selecting the similitude requirements that minimize the scale effects is presented. The similarity relations are derived using the dimensional analysis. First scales are determined using as many conditions as possible. If the scales are unacceptable due to practical constraints, one of the conditions, which is the least important, is relaxed. The scaling relations are obtained from the remaining conditions. The procedure is repeated until acceptable scales are obtained.
