Abstract: The daily precipitation amounts were considered over period (1895-1990), at five stations in Romania. The periods with precipitation excess were considered as those for which the precipitation total over subsequent 5 days exceeded 85% of the threshold value (50 mm). The dry spells were defined, those with 20 subsequent days without precipitation. Statistical methods were used for the analysis of the extreme events, emphasising the variability, persistency, the cyclic periods as well as the precipitation excess and drought index. A procedure was proposed for the probability transformation of the concrete statistical distribution into one close to the gaussian (normal) one. The return mean time for an exceptional phenomenon (precipitation excess) is determined.
