Experimental Research Results for Hydraulic Design of High-Lift Lock Culvert Valves

Abstract: This paper gives a brief summary of the Three Gorges Project's (TGP) lock culvert valve hydraulic research experimental results which may be referential in hydraulic design of high-lift lock culvert valve or the similar kind of research. The research results presented in this paper include the testing methods, selection of tainter (curve) valve arrangement in the valve region and its corresponding hydraulic characteristics, cavitation, selection of valve structure types, hydraulic loads acting on the trunnion, loads and load variations on the valve hoist caused by flowing water, and geometric optimization of the valve to reduce the hoist loads. Testing results indicate that unsteady flow modeling should be conducted in high head valve hydraulic research. Tainter valve in the normal position could be used with some advantages if the submergence is enough. Many measures could be adopted in cavitaion prevention. Selection of tainter valve structural type depends on the valve arrangements. The loads and load variation on the valve hoist due to flowing water is affected by valve structural types and outer geometric shapes, and the maximum hydraulic hoist loads can be effectively reduced through the optimization of valve geometric shapes.
