Abstract: By analyzing hydraulic characteristics of multiple layered jets from high arch dam, this paper proposes that the energy of jets and unit-width discharge focus as water jets merge sufficiently into a whole, which is confirmed by measurements from aerodynamics and hydraulic model tests. Based on many prototype observations on rock bed scour from Kariba arch dam, Tabela spillway etc, a formula on scour depth estimation is established by introducing an anti-erosion water depth, which shows the performances of multiple layered jets diffusing in the water cushion pool. Comparison of predicted values using above formula with measured those from a physical model on Xiaowan high arch dam indicates that the formula is feasible. Results can be used as a guide in designing works to discharge flood from high arch dam and dissipate energy
