Abstract: The scour that occurs in a erodible bed caused by the presence of a stable rough sill is investigated by means of a series of experimental runs in a laboratory flume. The problem is greatly complicated by the presence of strong turbulence due to roughness of the sill and by the hydraulic jump that is established in the scour. These two aspects influence the flow near the end of the sill and the occurrence and development of the scour downstream to the sill. Some qualitative and quantitative results are here presented with a preliminary description of the phenomenon.
