Abstract: A one-dimensional vertical (1-DV) numerical model has been developed to predict the vertical distribution of fine suspended sediment concentration during spring tide, moderate tide and neap tide at the mouth of the North Passage in the Changjiang Estuary. There is a good agreement between modelled and measured concentration data. This suggests that the major processes affecting the vertical distribution of fine suspended sediment at the mouth of the North Passage (seaward end) are the upward diffusion and the downward settling of fine suspended sediment flocs. Since the present 1-DV model was successfully used in a specific field location for different tidal conditions, it may have application for other estuaries.
