Abstract: This paper deals with stratification effects in high-concentrated suspensions of cohesive sediment. It is argued that, apart form sediment-induced buoyancy effects, stratification can also be caused by flocculation effects. Simulations with a 1DV POINT MODEL of measured concentration distributions in the Ems estuary showed favourable agreement between the computational and experimental data only if both the effects of sediment-induced buoyancy and flocculation are taken into account.
