A Model to Delineate the Headcut Migration Process

Abstract: Flume experiments were conducted to investigate the headcut erosion process in heterogeneous non-cohesive soil. The effects of hydraulic and geometric condition on headcut migration speed were analyzed. Adhesive color spray applied on the top surface resisted the surface erosion and thus ensured the headcut development. The experimental result showed the plunge pool morphology remained unchanged with time for a given flow discharge. The migration speed increased with both flow discharge and headcut height, where the effect of headcut height was found more significant. A conceptual model was developed based on jet induced scour process in plunge pool to explain details of the headcut migration process. The result of conceptual model reasonably agreed with the experimental data, which ensures that the model is able to predict the headcut migration speed with sufficient accuracy.
