Approach for Reducing Sedimentation in Flood Retention Reservoirs

Abstract: Precipitation leads to raised discharges carrying an increasing part of suspended material. After reaching flood retention reservoirs, the sediments settle in the reservoirs and the consequences are problems which are not negligible. Often the only solution is a very expensive dredging of the reservoirs. Hence, there is an urgent demand for working out practice-oriented countermeasures to reduce the sedimentation. For the partly opposite aims of flood protection and reduction of sedimentation, a compromise can be found by a combined solution of structural and operational measures and maintenance. Field measurements with additional laboratory research were realised for a representative flood retention reservoir in Southern Germany, to gain information about the characteristic of the sediments. In addition, in the hydraulic laboratory of the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering, University of Stuttgart, experiments with various sands were performed in a physical model. With the aid of structures, e.g. groynes or flow guiding elements in combination with different reservoir emptying operation rules, an improvement of the flow and consequently of the sedimentation was achieved. By the evaluation of the field measurements and the model experiments, an approach was found to reduce sedimentation in the flood retention reservoir.
