Abstract: Open channel is a commonly used water conveyance structure to connect the pressurized pipelines and reservoir in hydropower stations. In previous research on operating stability analysis of the hydropower stations with open channel, the effect of open channel flow was often neglected, but this simplification is not reasonable and feasible for some hydropower stations with smooth connection to open channel, especially for the changing top-altitude tail tunnel and flat top tail tunnel with top elevation between variation ranges of tail water level. Therefore, based on the basic equations of open channel flow and hydraulic vibration theory, linear model of channel flow for stability analysis is derived, furthermore, stiff model and elastic models with different order can also be further deduced. With two given cases, the effect of open channel flow on stability analysis is investigated and compared with the results of traditional simplification. It is showed that, the stability and regulation performance with the consideration of open channel flow is obvious different from that of traditional simplification and the effect of channel flow should not be neglected in some cases.
