Abstract: A methodology to analyse the ecohydraulic performance of vertical slot fishways is presented and applied to a small dam with a vertical slot fishway placed in a river reach. Three criteria are proposed in order to determine the efficiency of vertical slot fishways. Considering the complexity of the hydraulic and biological phenomena involved in the process of swimming through a fishway, the methodology proposed here does not intend to determine a precise value of the fish size which is needed to pass the fishway, but rather to establish an objective way for comparing different fishway designs, considering not only hydraulic aspects but also trying to quantify biological aspects of the target fish species. In order to do this analysis we use an ecohydraulic numerical model based on the two-dimensional shallow water equations, which considers the biological characteristics of different fish species/life stage.
