Abstract: Three Gorges Project is located in Sandouping, Xiling gorge of Yangtze River, is made up of water retaining structures, discharge structures, hydropower station and navigation structures etc. Hydropower station is at dam toe, 14 hydrogenerator units are installed in left side factory, 12 hydrogenerator units are installed in right side factory, with single unit capacity of 700MW. Underground hydropower factory is arranged in right bank mountain, with 6 hydrogenerator units (single unit capacity of700 MW) installed. By hydraulic model test, single water intake scheme and double water intakes scheme are studied and optimized for hydropower station of Three Gorges Project. Due to 44% decreased working gate orifice area and reduced investment of about one hundred million RMB, single intake scheme (small intake) is recommended for apply into this project. This scheme of water intake for hydropower station can be used as reference to others similar hydraulic projects.
