Abstract: In 17th century in Japan, full-scale countermeasures against flood disasters were implemented. The Kase River Basin of the Saga Plain includes such flood damage prevention facilities everywhere. The original flood management technology that comes from comprehensive river basin management by collaboration of these facilities is gradually elucidated. On the other hand, the same riparian works were done in the Midori River Basin of the Kumamoto Plain. The solution of these traditional flood control technologies is considered to lead not only the historical evaluation of these works but also the reference of the future river basin management. In this paper, a comparative study on the traditional flood control technology between the Kase River and Midori River is implemented through literature review, field investigation and hydraulic simulations. The hydraulic calculation for the Midori River shows a function of the Kutsuwa-Domo to weaken the magnitude of the flood flow.
