Abstract: In this paper, a coastal process model with shock-capturing technique is developed for simulating coastal flows driven by storm surges, waves, tides, and river floods in coasts. This model is based on the solution of nonlinear shallow water equations with inclusions of the shortwave-averaged radiation stresses, turbulence mixing, bottom friction stress, geotropic force, and wind stresses. The Godunov-type shock capturing scheme along with the Roe's approximate Riemann solver is adopted for simulations of supercritical flows. This model is validated by comparing the numerical results with the experimental dam-break flow; and then is applied to simulate the hydrodynamic and morphodynamic responses to a hypothetical surge tide and wave in a coast with barrier island and inlet; and the results are well produced.
