Abstract: Regular Eulerian mesh-based numerical methods such as finite element and finite volume have difficulties in modeling flow with large deformations and fragmentation of boundaries and interfaces. The mesh-free particle (Lagrangian) methods are developed in recent years to deal with such fluid flow problems. In spite of numerous works in particle methods, these methods are still limited in terms of applications and scopes, especially in modeling of flow in open channels. This study aims to use one of the famous particle methods, namely, moving particle semi-implicit method (MPS), and apply it for modeling flow over a spillway which is a common open channel problem. The numerical results are compared with experimental measurements. This study shows the capabilities of MPS method to calculate water surface profile and velocity field for an ogee spillway. Furthermore, the results of this study show the applicability of the particle method for other open channel problems.
