Abstract: This paper presents an evaluation of the use of computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) techniques to study the flow through reverse Tainter gates in conduits. 2D numerical simulations were carried out with the k-ε model for gate openings equal to 10,30,50,60 and 100% of the conduit diameter. Numerical results were compared to experimental data obtained in a physical model built at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Comparisons among numerical results and experimental data on velocity profiles upstream of the gate and distribution of mean pressures along the conduit bottom and roof show good agreement, validating the application of CFD techniques to understand the hydraulics of the flow through reverse Tainter gates.
