Abstract: In the present study, the movement of the seawater in the mouth of a river is investigated and the turbulent diffusion equation of three dimensions is taken to show the movement of seawater. After some assumptions are taken on the phenomena in the estuary and a new variable is introduced, the diffusion equation is modified to the ordinary differential equation concerning on the new variable. The diffusion field in the present theoretical model is divided into two layers, upper and lower layers, in a perpendicular direction. The modified diffusion equation shows the seawater movement in one of the layers. The theoretical solution of the differential equation is obtained, and the solution can generate well the movement of seawater going up or down in the mouth of a river. The present theory is compared with field observations carried out in the mouth of River Iwaki. The comparison shows that the theory and the observations show a good agreement.
