Abstract: The use of digital elevation models in order to extract hydrologic parameter values and the selection of appropriate computation methods for determination of stormwater discharge is discussed in connection with two case studies in Greece. The methodology applied for torrents and rivers intersecting a highway and a railway project is presented. In the highway project the whole drainage area involved was modeled in the HEC-HMS environment. In the railway project according to project specifications the rational method and the Fuller method were applied. In both cases25mx25m grid DEM was used. Advancements in computational technology and geographical information systems facilitate combining distributed data regarding land use, geologic characteristics, etc influencing the parameters involved in peak flow determination. Drainage area is the key parameter in determining runoff peaks, but the relation is not linear. Comparisons with the rational method, empirical equations, and hydrologic modeling with the HEC-HMS system using SCS hydrographs are presented.
