Abstract: The purpose of this work is to check the suitability of a dam-breach model for the simulation of loose-rockfill dam failures. For this aim the Hell Hole dam failure (California, 1964) has been analyzed. The simulation has been performed setting for the model's calibration parameter ve, the value for which the computed peak discharge matches the observed one. The value of veso obtained is greater than the value obtained for earthfill dams. Moreover the shape of the computed hydrograph is very similar to the observed one. These findings confirm the soundness of physical basis of the model here investigated.
