Abstract: Most Chinese cities have suffered from three urban storm water-related problems such as floods, water scarcity and runoff pollution. However, conventional solutions usually focus on one of them and integrated measures are seldom used. Therefore, new design steps for urban storm sewer system based on systematic engineering are proposed to improve and optimize the whole systematic function. Firstly, target rainfall event patterns are determined according to rainfall time series analysis or synthesization. Secondly, design parameters for pipes are optimized through SWMM simulation. Thirdly, system risk information is evaluated by number of overflow manholes, total overflow volume and system average water-logging time. It shows that the design method based on systematic engineering is feasible and effective.
