Abstract: Recent growing interest in reservoir concentration monitoring by ultrasonic diagnostic methods is based on attenuation spectrometry. In this paper, we present the design and fabrication of a novel chamber-type system to measure sediment concentration. The chamber-type system of ultrasonic measurement will switch the measuring frequency between 1Mhz and 10Mhz for different concentration ranges automatically. We can get the data of sediment concentration via wireless technique in real-time base during the typhoon period. The ultrasonic measurement system has been employed successfully in the Shihmen and Tsengwen reservoirs during several typhoons in 2008. We verify the system through laboratory experiments to demonstrate that the overall error of full scale concentration is within 5%. A new concept of system calibration for concentration versus attenuation from medical ultrasonic is also introduced in this paper.
