Abstract: The paper considers self-regulation effects in vegetated channels using a concept of statistically stable flows proposed in the seventies by Russian hydrodynamicist K. V. Grishanin. This concept appeared to be successful in explaining and describing alluvial channels and our study and tests suggest that it may be as fruitful in consideration of vegetated channels. In addition, our tests demonstrate that this approach may potentially offer some simple techniques for estimating the depth of flow penetration into vegetation canopies without invoking turbulence measurements. Potential applications of the reported results also include flow resistance estimates in vegetated channels.
