Abstract: This paper presents results of a laboratory experiment and a complementary Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of turbulent flow in an open channel over a gravel bed. Physical experiments were carried out over a water worked gravel bed armor layer (d50 = 18.4 mm) over which 24 vertical profiles of flow velocities, turbulence intensities and Reynolds stresses were measured for a discharge of 90 l/s and a water depth of 0.168 m using a Dantec 3D-Laser Doppler Anemometer. LES calculations were carried out using a sub-section of the bed where detailed information on bed topography is available from high resolution measurements. Mean streamwise velocities, turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stresses obtained from the LES calculations are compared to the measurements in order to validate the calculations.
