Abstract: An experimental study of turbulent open channel flow near small-scale and large-scale trashrack or bar rack models that are comprised of an array of bars is reported. The experiments were conducted for a wide range of bar depth, bar shape, bar spacing and bar inclination to approach flow. A particle image velocimetry technique was used to conduct velocity measurements around the small-scale models, from which iso-contours and profiles of the mean velocities and turbulent statistics were obtained to study the effects of bar shape, bar depth and bar inclination to approach flow on the flow field and head losses through the bars. An acoustic Doppler velocimeter and a point gauge were used for the large-scale model experiments. The results demonstrate that the head loss coefficient increased linearly with blockage ratio but non-linearly with bar inclination. Significant reduction in head loss was observed when square leading edge rectangular bars were replaced with round leading edge rectangular bars, or if streamlined profile cross-sections were used instead of rectangular bars.
