Abstract: The paper describes the turbulence characteristics measured by using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) within the degraded channel bed surface. The bed material of channel bed consisted of the mixture of gravel and clay mixed in equal proportion by weight. A three component ADV was used to measure velocity components and turbulence data in the degraded bed profile. The observations were made at three locations along the degraded bed profile. The maximum value of turbulence intensity and Reynolds' stress was noticed to occur. The magnitude of turbulence intensity and Reynolds' stresses are observed to reduce, as one moves towards the downstream along the degraded bed profile which signifies that vortex structure weakened along the downstream of the degraded surface. Quadrant analysis has been performed to demonstrate the importance of ejection and sweep phases in sediment detachment and transport.
