Abstract: A brief review of the coexistence of the Anahuac valley settlers with their surrounding environment is presented throughout the history of the hydraulic works built to quench the monstrous thirst of ancient Mexico City. The present paper aims to encourage the reader to recognise the magnitude of the hydraulic structures built to supply fresh water to Mexico City from the XIV to the XVIII centuries and to learn from the accumulated experience, as modern inhabitants of Mexico City struggle with the mounting pressure on their water supply infrastructure.
