Abstract: Sheared, density-stratified flows that are unstable to Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities are an important part of ocean and atmosphere dynamics. The twodimensional evolution of these instabilities is studied using a direct numerical (DNS) technique and a computationally efficient semi-analytical model. Some predictions of this model are validated by comparison with the DNS results. The model can be beneficial in predicting the two-dimensional behavior of instabilities, especially for conditions for which the DNS is not feasible.
