Abstract: The environmental condition of the coastal marine area of Japan is characterized with regular red tide and oxygen depleted water occurrence in the sea bottom of the Seto Inland Sea in summer season. Our concerns are about the impact of those phenomena on the biological production process in the sea area. We have noticed some kinds of metals in the semi-enclosed bays like Yashima Bay, located in the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea, as well as serious deterioration in the water quality and bottom sediment. Therefore, we proposed in this paper a technology for improving the marine sediment environment by setting a new porous material, which consists of slag as one of the industrial by-products. The porous material has appropriate void and strength to efficiently habituate the marine organisms. We also examined the effect of the sediment quality improvement by using that porous material. The developed porous material can remove the metal from contaminated bottom sediment.
