Development of a Hydrologic Modeling Environment Using the TRIDENT Workflow Engine

Abstract: Hydrologic models can be conceptualized as a flowchart of data-driven operations involving data accessing, harvesting, digesting, processing and analysing etc. To date, the development of internet infrastructure enables accessing large data sets from online repositories via SOAP or FTP protocol based machine-to-machine communications. On the other hand, the practice of hydrologic modelling has resulted in the creation of abundant legacy codes. Those available resources can facilitate the development of multi-functional model systems for carrying out hydrologic modelling tasks. In this paper, we present a workflow engine (TRIDENT) shelled hydrologic modelling environment, which basically supports customizing hydrologic-modelling-oriented workflows by means of chaining up swappable modules (called activities in TRIDENT). The modules are categorized into four libraries one each for online/local data retrieval, geospatial and time series data processing, hydrologic computation, and post-analysis respectively. The environment provides more flexibility for implementing hydrologic simulations through the seamless integration of data sources in addition to allowing multiple execution pathways for hydrologic models of varying complexity.
