Predicting Baseflow Contributions to Design Flood Events in Australia

Abstract: Baseflow can potentially make a significant contribution to smaller flood events, particularly where the catchment geology consists of high yielding aquifers. Project 7 of the Australian Rainfall and Runoff update is aimed at providing advice on the estimation of baseflow in design flood events. To support this, over 30,000 flood events were identified across more than 230 catchments throughout Australia. The baseflow contribution to each of these events was characterised using a digital recursive filter tailored for hourly streamflow data. Catchment characteristics, such as geological conditions, soil type, climate and topography, were extracted for each catchment and used to understand drivers for event baseflow contribution. Regional prediction equations were then developed and applied to enable the estimation of baseflow contribution for ungauged catchments across Australia based only on catchment characteristics.
