Modelling Climate Change Impact on the Salinity Distribution in Coastal Zone: A Case Study in Bangladesh

Abstract: A one dimensional salinity transport model has been developed to describe the spatial and temporal variability of the salinity in coastal waters in the Southwest region of Bangladesh. Particular attention was paid to determine the impact of climate change i.e. sea level rise and the effect of sea salinity change. The salinity model, based on advection dispersion equation, has been applied to the complex river system in the area. The model has been run for two different time periods in the year 2002. A finite-difference method was used for the solution of advection and dispersion terms and was an important consideration in reasonably simulating the salinity intrusion. The simulations compare favourably water level and salinity time series observations during the period. The outcomes show that rise in sea level will increase the salinity of a large part of this coastal zone.
