Abstract: The Gippsland Lakes is an interconnected set of water bodies covering an area of around 340 km2 in eastern Victoria, Australia. Several towns surrounding the Lakes are subject to flooding when lake levels rise because of a combination of high inflows, winds and the influence of coastal ocean levels. Lake level response to high winds (wind setup) was investigated as part of a wider project to predict water levels across the Lakes. This paper discusses the estimation of wind set up at multiple locations within the Gippsland Lakes. The method applied accounts for variability in wind speed, wind direction and the non-uniform nature of the depth and shoreline of the Lakes. Verification with the December 1998 high wind period, which impacted the 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race, was undertaken. The average error was two centimetres over a three day period.
