RORB-Monte Carlo Applications in Metropolitan Melbourne Catchments

Abstract: Australian Rainfall and Runoff (I.E. Aust, 1987) provides a number of design rainfall temporal patterns. While, based on historical pluviographic rainfall data, the small number of zones defined provide limited information on local rainfall patterns at a specific location. This paper applies RORB to numerous tributary catchments within Gardiners Creek in Melbourne's South-East by the sampling of rainfall temporal patterns from long term pluviographic records. The analysis is used to assess the impacts on peak flows at the outlet of six of the tributary main drain catchments and also at the downstream end of Gardiners Creek. Results are then related to flood extents and hazards generated from various hydraulic models. Climate Change impacts are also assessed through the application of increased rainfall intensities. This paper provides broad conclusions on the potential applications of a Monte Carlo style simulation approach in flood mapping, particularly the application of flood freeboards on properties.
