Abstract: There are two widely-used methods in distributed hydrological models to compute daily rainfall pattern, random distribution pattern method and triangular distribution pattern method, neither of which, however, performs well enough. In order to improve the accuracy of rainfall input, this study investigated the real distribution of rainfall by using the long-term rainfall records from 1951 to 1997 collected by 767 Gauges in the Yellow River basin. The daily rainfall records were grouped into six categories according to the daily rainfall amount: 100mm. As to each category, statistical analysis showed that rainfall pattern was close to Pearson-Ⅲ type distribution. This study will significantly improve the accuracy of rainfall input in distributed hydrological models.
