Abstract: The vortex drop shaft which have two volute chambers with aeration is suitable for flows with high water head and large discharge outlet structures. However, the flow since inside is complex, it is important to evaluate the flow regime and aeration effect caused. This paper presents the numerical simulation of the complex flow in a vortex drop shaft by using the k-ε two-equation model for turbulent flow and MIX method. The simulated results of free surface profile, the magnitude and distribution of velocity and pressure are identical to the physical model test, results demonstrating that the method used can simulate the flow reasonably, provide scientific explanation for the flow feature and energy dissipation of this type, and enable us to promote of application of this type of device in hydroelectric projects.
