Abstract: Discharge coefficients for side weirs are required in sewage systems, dam reservoirs, dike breach scenarios or flooding processes of underground spaces. There exists considerable research and available literature on discharge coefficients for general weirs. However, the side weir discharge coefficients presented are not always satisfying. Theoretical approaches by Preissler and Bollrich (1980), ATV-A 111 (1994), or Hager (1987) tend to lead to under or over-estimated discharges due to unknown downstream flow characteristics. Hence, an investigation program is carried out to determine discharges for simple side openings with broad-crested weirs and varying main channel boundary conditions. Numerical results are compared with a more recent empirical approach by Disse et al. (2003), who developed a formula to determine discharge through a breach opening in a river dike. A new adapted approach is proposed to estimate side weir overflows.
