A Numerical Model for Fish Movement Through Culverts

Abstract: We assume that fish move according to changes in physical and biological conditions. Depending on their preferences they will rapidly select the best location that is accessible. This paper presents a numerical model for fish movement. In this model, a fitness measure is developed, that causes a fish to select habitat that maximizes its expected probability of survival over a specified time horizon. This fitness measure is dependent on the fish's current state, making fish with low energy reserves. Further, the model is formulated with random selection of destinations. When a fish moves in this model, its destination is the first location, selected randomly from among nearby locations, where selection criteria fall within specified tolerance ranges. The method is applied to modeling fish passing through a culvert in Mulherin Creek (USA). The measured data of water velocity are used for calculation of fish tracking. The calculated results are compared with measurements. They show good agreement.
