Effects of Configuration on Flow Structures and Sediment Deposition in a Concavity Zone of Flood Plain

Abstract: In compound rivers, a part of flood plain is sometimes excavated to expand flow crosssectional area to provide good water environment for ecological system. In order to maintain this type of concavity in flood plains, it is necessary to understand the flow structures and sediment deposition. In this study, we investigated three-dimensional flow structures in a concavity zone in a compound open channel experimentally. We focused on the configuration of concavity as a design item and measured the three-dimensional flow structures by using a PIV method. Furthermore, sediment deposition tests were conducted and the relation of flow structures to sediment transport process was considered. The deposition morphology in the concavity zone was affected extremely by the orientation angle of backward-facing step and forward-facing step. The 3-D flow structures were also deformed by the step angle and they correspond well to the characteristic deposition morphology in the concavity zone.
