Water Surface Profile and Hydraulic Jump Along a Side Weir

Abstract: Side weirs are used for flow or level control in hydraulic engineering. Flow along this structure is classified as Spatially Varied Flow (SVF) with decreasing discharge. Once SVF is coupled with a hydraulic jump along the side weir, it further adds to the complexity of flow phenomena. In spite of many studies on SVF along the side weirs, a few research works have considered the hydraulic jump along this structure. In present research, a 1D numerical model for solving the SVF equation was developed using Runge Kutta method. This model not only computes the SVF water profile along the side weir but also can specify the location of hydraulic jump, if it occurs within the weir section. Comparisons of results of the presented numerical model show good agreements with the previous data.
