Genetic Algorithms for the Optimization of Control Structures

Abstract: Flood risk analysis is currently used in the development of flood control plans and the design of structures. However, the computation of yearly expected damage is a time consuming process which demands the use of different programs and models (hydrodynamic, flood mapping, damage calculations, etc.). A methodology has been developed to perform a flood risk based optimization of control structures, using Genetic Algorithms. Flood damage functions have been derived and each alternative is evaluated for several return periods. The methodology uses Genetic Algorithms to perform combinations in the logical operation rules of the gates, introduces the changes in the hydrodynamic model and asses the changes in terms of flood risk. Results indicate that Genetic Algorithms appear to be an effective tool in optimizing control structures on a risk-based approach. The optimized set of rules led to a reduction of 40 % of the yearly expected flood damage.
