Abstract: The major approaches to the definition and evaluation of the reliability of water distribution systems are reviewed and new insights developed. Techniques for incorporating the reliability of the sources and other sub-systems of the distribution or supply network are presented. Pressure-dependent modelling of the distribution system is shown to be invaluable if operating conditions involving a shortfall in pressure, or the severity of hydraulic failures, are to be accounted for properly. Failure tolerance and redundancy are discussed and the need for further research in this area is highlighted along with areas where there are gaps in the current knowledge. A numerical example is included.
