Abstract: The use of submerged vanes to divert sediment movements on seabed and open channel flows are common in many engineering projects. The vane consists generally of a thin vertical structure with small-aspect ratio and placed on the channel beds at an angle to the approach flow. A physical model was constructed to investigate the characteristics of flow and sediment motion around submerged vanes in order to obtain a proper design of submerged vane for sediment diversion towards a specific direction in the project area. Five different alignments, four different heights and special layouts of the submerged vanes were tested. A criterion for the prevention of bed form creeping over the top of the vane is proposed. A method for rational design of a system of submerged vane for sediment diversion is proposed.
