Abstract: Scour around solid bridge piers was studied before on different kinds, shapes, and arrangements of piers. In this paper scour around bridge piers provided with internal openings was experimentally studied. Results insure that the constructed openings through the pier reduce scour more than that happened in solid one. An equation based on experimental results was established to calculate maximum scour depth in case of pier provided with openings. The developed equation was compared with the others deduced for solid pier and results shoed that openings has an effect on scour.
