Abstract: This paper presents the results of experimental and numerical studies on the turbulent coherent structures caused by groynes or bridge abutments in presence of local scour. Measurements of the velocity field were carried out using an acoustic 3D Doppler velocimeter, while the Fluent CDF code was used to simulate the three dimensional flow field, via a standard k-ε turbulence model. Results of measurements and calculations were compared to check the reliability of the k-ε model to simulate the flow field around this type of structures, mainly inside the scour hole. This allows to describe in a qualitative and quantitative manner so complex a velocity field and to identify the most important coherent structures and their interaction with the sediments. These topics are relevant in the comprehension of the scour process and in the analysis of scour data.
