Abstract: The natural adjustment of rivers is an important tool to improve the ecological conditions of rivers. What natural (self regulated) adjustment of rivers means, under what circumstances it can be accepted, what kind of adjustment will happen, how it can be initiated, controlled and also limited are important questions for planning. The natural development of a river bend on the river Sieg, a tributary of the river Rhine, will is an example for the work that has been done in the last two decades. The development of the river Sieg cover typical scopes as flood defence, improvement of fish migration, vegetation management in riparian areas and in the river meadow, improvement of methods of river maintenance et al.
