Abstract: The present research is towards the understanding of the mechanism of the sediment diversion at the open channel junction with free flow condition at the branch channel. For the study of the sediment diversion characteristics, change in width of the bottom dividing streamline was studied for the various flow conditions at the channel junction. The ratio of the percentage discharge diversion of the incoming sediment corresponding to the percentage discharge diversion of flow was analyzed and it was understood that this ratio depends upon the Froude Number of the incoming flow (F1) and the depth ratio of flow at the branch to the main channel (d3/d1). d3/d1 ratio was also found to be varying with the aspect ratio (defined as ratio of depth of incoming flow to the width of the branch channel). Even in the similar flow conditions, width of bottom dividing streamline was found to be more for the flow having the larger value of aspect ratio than that of small one.
