Abstract: A three-dimensional k-ε model was used to simulate the complex turbulence flow in a natural flood channel and river. The VOF method for free surface prediction by two-phase flow theory was explored and the corresponding boundary conditions are prescribed in the model. The comparison of the predicted results with the field measured data shows that the VOF method can simulate the three-dimensional spatial variation of the free surface and the influence of the downstream backwater. It is concluded that the VOF method is more accurate than traditional 1-D free surface computations for transient flow.
