Abstract: The interface between engineering education and engineering licensure in the United States is the focus of a great deal of attention as the new accreditation culture and expectations take root. In becoming less proscriptive with regard to technical content, while becoming more demanding of professionalism and other non-technical content in the curriculum, the new accreditation criteria may be producing better engineers while concomitantly weakening the uniformity of their technical background. There may be a need, in the U. S., for a strengthened role of examination in the licensure of engineers whose practice affects the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
