Abstract: In this work we present the state of art review of the experience of Ingegneria Senza Frontiere (Engineering Without Borders) related to engineering education. ISF/EWB denotes several European and North American independent, non profit, university based organisations participating and promoting development education and cooperation programs together with partners in developing and developed countries. These activities are mostly carried out by volounteers and are centered on the investigation of the role of technology in human development which is thought to find its most suitable place in university settings. In particular, appropriate technologies and scientific knowledge related to the management of water resources play a central role in this context, as they are strictly related to basic human needs and rights. The paper points out how the principles, methods and activities themselves of ISF/EWB fit the educational needs of engineering students and contribute to the lifelong learning process of the university staff, professionals and the part of the community involved, ultimately focusing on the basic objective of understanding how technology can really improve the well being of the world's citizens.
