Abstract: This paper introduces an innovative postgraduate programme called Hydroinformatics and Management Systems run by the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. This programme combines MSc training and continuing professional development for people in full-time employment, offering a unique mixture of technical and business related modules. The aim of the programme is to produce technically able students who can address problems related to the management of the water environment. Information technology occupies a central role in delivering user-friendly distance learning material and in providing effective support for learning.
